LGBT Tourism – a Rainbow Welcome

Tourism companies working with the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) communities understand that this “Double Income No Kids” segment represents a lucrative source of business. Within Sussex, Brighton is extremely well established as a gay friendly destination and there is a growing scene in Hastings. There are many LGBT run businesses spread across the county, as well as a wealth of attractions of particular interest, including the gardens, historic houses and arts venues.

To extend the benefits of “The Pink Pound” across the county means providing a first class welcome and relaxing experience with no pretence or embarrassment. In the first instance this means changing assumptions that the LGBT Community is confined to people who visit bars, clubs and restaurants, as only a small proportion of LGBT visitors want a totally gay holiday. Most often LGBT Visitors want a break in a mainstream destination where they can relax and unwind.

A survey carried out at a recent Brighton Pride festival revealed that 73% of gay men and 71% of lesbians said they purchase from companies which are gay friendly. So STP is drawing together some simple guidance for accommodation businesses keen to welcome the LGBT community, with a long term view to wider promotion of the county as providing a real rainbow welcome.

There are a number of established networks promoting travel destinations and tourism businesses either run by, or run for, the LGBT community.
