Travelling to East Sussex


East Sussex has a great range of places to stay. Whether you're looking for a Grand, Five Star Hotel,a Self-Catering Cottage in the country, or a friendly, family-run bed & breakfast, you'll find plenty to choose from here.

By sea Hoverspeed operates a 2 hour Super Seacat service from April to January between Newhaven and Dieppe. Transmanche Ferries operate a 4 hour service between Newhaven and Dieppe all year round.

The Channel Tunnel and other major ports Dover, Folkestone, Portsmouth and Southampton are between 1 and 3 hours away by motorway, depending on your destination.

By rail Travel from Paris, Brussels or Lille by Eurostar to Ashford International Station or London Waterloo. Frequent direct trains run from Ashford to East Sussex destinations.

From London, frequent fast trains run to East Sussex:

Brighton - Victoria and London Bridge (journey time 49 and 80 minutes)

Eastbourne - Victoria (journey time 80 minutes)

Hastings - Victoria and Charing Cross (journey time 90 minutes)

Lewes - Victoria (journey time 60 minutes)

There are also good Intercity train services from other parts of the UK.

By air London Gatwick International Airport is nearby and has direct road and rail links with the main destinations.

London Heathrow Airport has a fast train service to London Paddington station, and visitors can travel on to East Sussex via mainline train services. There is also a fast coach link from Heathrow to Gatwick.

Shoreham Airport, 41/2 miles west of Brighton, is planning to operate a twice daily service between Shoreham and Le Touquet on France's north coast, 20km from Boulogne.

By road From London there are direct roads to the coast, and good access via the M23 and M25 London Orbital. For a more scenic route through the Sussex countryside, take the A21, A22 or A26. The A27 and A259 coastal roads link the area with the cross Channel ports and the Channel Tunnel, which can also be reached via the M20 motorway.

There are regular Express coach services from London Victoria coach station.
